New York, NY Local Fork and Leda’s Urban Homestead have collaborated to launch the first comprehensive buying guide of local food within New York City limits. The Locavore’s Guide to New York City lists the ingredient, who produces it, how far that producer is from the city, where that product can be found, and when it is available.

In addition, The Guide encourages New Yorker’s to get involved in the project by simply submitting their local food sightings and/or photographs within The Guide.

The Guide was conceived by local blogger Leda Meredith, of Leda’s Urban Homestead. Starting a 250-mile diet of her own this year, Leda sought to document where New Yorkers could find the complete kitchen (and pantry) of foods she needed to eat locally for a year. Beyond a simple farmer’s market listing, The Guide includes items that can be bought online and at stores throughout the city.

After hearing about her project, Local Fork was excited to help expand The Guide through crowdsourcing. In addition to using The Guide to locate hard to find ingredients, users have the opportunity to benefit both the NYC locavore community and regional producers by contributing their local food sightings to the guide.

The Guide’s first public debut will be at New Amsterdam Public’s Wintermarket this upcoming Sunday, the 16th. Amongst NYC chefs such as Mario Batali, David Shea, and Caroline Fidanza, Local Fork will be inviting visitors to join The Guide.

Seasonal as well as local, The Guide now includes a Winter Holiday Guide of locally produced gifts, ingredients essential for holiday meals, and recipes.

Founded by Charlie Strout in late 2006, Local Fork is a private company committed to stimulating the local food networks by providing an online community space, marketplace and business tools. Local Fork's collaboration with Leda Meredith serves its goal to establish and support the New York City's local food community online. Currently, Local Fork is actively building its network of consumers, artisans, farmers, and food service businesses. Local Fork will be launching its full service site this winter.
